First Visit

At Dr. Patty Miami, we know that having good oral hygiene and dental care habits since childhood is the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Preventive oral care usually begins when the first tooth erupts, and no later than age one.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends establishing a Dental Home for your child by their first birthday. That’s because early dental appointments help prevent serious dental issues from developing and can catch and treat those that may have already started.

Why Kids Need A Dental Home

Your child’s baby teeth are the bases of their permanent smile. They need special care and treatment because of how prevalent tooth decay and cavities are at this moment of life. Untreated cavities and decay can be incredibly painful. They can also set the stage for a wealth of problems later in life.

The concept of a “Dental Home” has become increasingly popular in the past few years. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), a dental home is a place where a child receives comprehensive oral health care delivered in a coordinated, family-centered way by a licensed dentist. Both the AAPD and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend establishing a Dental Home no later than the child’s first birthday.

Children with a Dental Home are more likely to receive adequate preventive care routine oral health treatment. Having a Dental Home for your child also means that you know who to call in case of a [dental emergency], or if you have questions about their oral health.

At Dr. Patty Miami, we would be thrilled to serve as a Dental Home for your child and entire family. Our welcoming, upscale dental and medical boutique is designed with comfort in mind. Each dental suite is outfitted with personal TV screens and ultra-comfy dental chairs. And our luxurious lobby area includes an iPad station, complimentary beverages, and a healthy café if you want a quick bite while you wait.

The First Visit

The first pediatric dentistry visit is fast and simple. Typically, the pediatric dentist will spend most of the time discussing your child’s dietary history, oral care habits and quickly examine their teeth and gums. If any teeth appear stained, the dentist may clean them with a special toothbrush and gritty toothpaste.

During this visit, the dentist will create a personalized program with oral homecare techniques and dietary advice. In our experience, a customized oral health program is a great way of laying a strong foundation for future healthy habits.

The dentist may also recommend other preventive strategies such as [sealant] or custom-made [mouthguards] to protect against sports injuries. Finally, we will provide a take-home oral hygiene goody bag and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

First Visit FAQs

When should I start cleaning my baby’s mouth?

You should take your child to the dentist for the first time by their first birthday or within six months of getting their first tooth.

When should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?

The short answer is YES! If your child has cavities or other dental problems, it’s important to get them checked out by a pediatric dentist. While not all cases will warrant treatment, your child’s baby teeth are the only teeth they’ll have for a while, so keeping them healthy is essential for their overall health.

Is Dental Work Necessary On Baby Teeth?

Tooth decay happens when the protective coating that covers teeth breaks down. You may be surprised to learn that tooth decay is the most common childhood disease.

  • Sleeping with a bottle
  • Not brushing regularly
  • Sugary foods and drinks, especially from a bottle or sippy cup
  • Sharing saliva. Did you know that you can pass along cavity-causing bacteria from your mouth into your child’s mouth? It’s best to avoid activities such as eating from the same utensils or kissing on the lips, especially if you’ve been having oral health issues yourself.
