Emergencies

You know how it goes. The kids are running around while you are busy taking care of a million things. Suddenly, a suspicious moment of silence followed by the SCREAM. One of your children walks up to you, cupping a tiny tooth on their hands and a bloody hole where their front tooth used to be.

Dental emergencies are more common than you may think. In fact, it’s estimated that about one-third of children will experience some kind of dental trauma during childhood. And because we understand how scary these situations can be, at Dr. Patty Miami we offer same and next-day appointments for all types of dental emergencies.

How Do I Know If My Child Has A Dental Emergency?

Not sure if your child is experiencing a dental emergency? Here are some scenarios that require immediate dental treatment:

Knocked-Out Tooth

Knocking out a tooth can be a scary experience for any kid. In some cases, dentists at Dr. Patty Miami might be able to reattach it. Here’s what to do:

  1. Call your dentist for an emergency appointment immediately.
  2. Pick up the tooth by the top — do not touch the root.
  3. Carefully rinse the tooth. Don’t scrub or remove any attached tissue.
  4. Try to gently place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place until you get to the dentist. If you are unable to place it back, put in a glass of milk.

Broken Or Chipped Tooth

A tooth that has broken or chipped may have suffered internal damage. It’s important to schedule an appointment with a children’s dentist at Dr. Patty Miami as soon as possible to avoid further complications. Here’s what to do:

  1. Make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
  2. Ask your child to rinse out their mouth with warm water.
  3. Apply a cold compress to relieve pain and swelling.

Displaced Teeth

If your child suffers an injury that causes teeth displacement (teeth that have moved out of their original position), avoid forcing the teeth back into their regular place. Here’s what to do:

  1. Call us for an appointment as soon as possible.
  2. Offer your child a pain reliever, such as Children’s Tylenol or Advil, if appropriate.
  3. Apply a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling

Other dental emergencies that require prompt treatment include:

  • Severe or chronic toothache
  • Sore or aching gums
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Severe bleeding after a baby tooth falls out

When To Go To The Emergency Room

Because dental emergencies typically involve blows to the head, there are some instances where you may need to take your child to the nearest ER or call 911. Seek urgent medical attention if your child:

  • Loses consciousness or has trouble breathing
  • Is bleeding profusely
  • Has severe cuts or lacerations to the face or mouth
  • Has signs of a jaw fracture or jaw dislocation
