Botox

What Is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is the brand name for an injectable treatment that uses botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax muscles. The toxin originally comes from a bacteria that triggers muscle paralysis. But it is totally safe and effective as a facial injectable, especially when applied by an experienced provider.

Like most cosmetic breakthroughs, Botox was initially intended to treat a number of medical conditions — muscle spasms, in this case. But by the early ’90s, scientists noticed that patients getting botulinum injections experienced the unlikely side effect of looking younger, fresher, and with fewer wrinkles. Fast forward more than 30 years, and Botox is the most popular non-surgical aesthetic procedure in the world, with more than 6 million treatments administered each year.

Face & Neck

The face and neck are the most common areas for Botox. By relaxing different facial muscles, you can shave off years of your appearance and look like a younger, better-rested version of yourself.

Keep in mind that Botox is not designed to remove or “freeze” your facial expressions. When performed by an experienced provider, like the cosmetic team at Dr. Patty Miami, your procedure should look subtle, be painless, and yield minimal to no bruising and discomfort.

These are some of our favorite areas of the face to treat with Botox:

Glabellar lines — these are the horizontal indentations that appear right in between the eyebrows. Sometimes called frown lines, this is an ideal place to inject Botox because it will both fill and smooth the area.

Forehead and crow’s feet — sometimes called “surprise lines,” these forehead creases are the most common concern of patients under 40. Botox injections can temporarily soften forehead lines and help prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Bunny lines — you know those cute little nose wrinkles some people do when they laugh or sniff something? If you do it, too, you need to stop ASAP. Scrunching your nose too much creates permanent tiny creases, called “bunny lines.” The solution is to inject a bit of Botox into either side of the nose to smooth away those wrinkles and keep the muscles from contracting too much.

Lipstick lines — the fine lines that form around your pout can be the result of aging or years of smoking. Botox relaxes the muscles above the upper lip and in the corners of the mouth to temporarily fade these lines. And as an added benefit, the injections typically cause the upper lip to roll slightly upwards, making it look juicier and more voluminous.

Jawline — Botox can be strategically injected into the lower face area to make the surrounding muscles pull up and in, slimming and sculpting your jawline in the process.

Neck —  the dreaded neck bands or “turkey neck” can make you look years older than you actually are. With Botox injections, you can reduce the appearance of these annoying bands and make your neck look longer and thinner.

Botox For Migraines

Healthcare providers first discovered that Botox was a fantastic alternative for reducing the frequency and severity of migraines when patients getting the injections for aesthetic reasons also happened to notice improvements in their migraine symptoms.

The Botox used for relaxing facial wrinkles is actually the same as the Botox used for migraines. In fact, it employs the same mechanism for achieving both objectives. Essentially, what Botox for migraines does is to paralyze nerve terminals that transmit pain signals so they don’t reach your brain and trigger a headache.

Everyone responds differently to the treatment. However, most migraine sufferers find Botox injections so effective they sometimes eliminate the need for medication — which is a huge deal, especially if you suffer from chronic migraines and surprise attacks often catch you off-guard.

As an added bonus, Botox injections for migraines can have the same rejuvenating effect as aesthetic Botox, which is kind of a buy-one-get-one-free deal for people who may be looking for both effects.

If you’re considering Botox for headaches in Miami, we invite you to come in for a complimentary consultation at our upscale medical and cosmetic boutique. During your appointment, we will review your medical history, talk about your lifestyle habits, and create a customized treatment plan based on your current needs.

Botox can be injected into different areas to relieve migraine, including the base of the skull, temples, neck, and shoulders. Most patients need 2 to 3 sessions to experience noticeable improvements in their migraines, and you can expect your results to last up to 12 weeks.

Botox For TMJ

The temporomandibular joints, located on either side of your skull, are the hinges that make talking, eating, and swallowing possible. If these joints become displaced or overworked — typically as the result of clenching or grinding your teeth due to chronic stress — it can lead to severe tension headaches, earaches, and face or jaw pain. This is called temporomandibular joint disorder, known as TMJ or TMD.

When administered correctly, Botox for TMJ relaxes the aching joints around the jaws and keeps them from engaging in involuntary movements like grinding or clenching while you sleep.

Jaw Botox is typically injected into the muscles that run down your cheek, known as the masseter muscles. The entire process only takes a few minutes, so you can be in and out of our luxury boutique and free of jaw pain in under an hour. You can expect to notice the full effect of your injections 7-10 days after your procedure.

Gummy Smile

One of the most surprising uses for Botox is treating a gummy smile, which is when too much pink shows above your top teeth when you smile. This happens because your upper lip curls under or you have excess gum tissue.

The good news is that there’s an easy fix for this issue. When tiny amounts of Botox are injected above the smile, it temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause your upper lip to lift excessively. The result is a more balanced grin that shows just the right amount of gum tissue.

The only caveat is that as a specialized procedure, it requires a thorough knowledge of facial and oral anatomy to avoid issues like asymmetry and loss of muscle strength. Lucky for you, pretty teeth and facial aesthetics are kind of our thing at Dr. Patty Miami.

If you are interested in getting Botox for gummy smile in Miami, give us a call  or to request an appointment online. Thanks to our expert approach and sophisticated touch, you’ll be so in love with your results, you’ll just keep coming back for more!

Botox FAQs

What’s the Procedure Like?

Botox only takes 15-20 minutes to complete and you really don’t need to do anything beforehand to prepare for your treatment.

After thoroughly cleaning the area, your provider will inject the neurotoxin directly into the muscles using an ultra thin needle. The injections don’t hurt, but you may feel a small pinch or sting as the needle penetrates the skin.

Are There Side Effects?

Any time you get an injection you have a risk of bruising and inflammation, and this is also true with Botox. The swelling usually goes down within a day or two, so avoid touching, massaging, or rubbing the area while it’s still tender.

What’s the Best Age for Botox Injections?

There isn’t a right or wrong age for getting Botox. Many of our patients in their late 20s and early 30s get smaller amounts of Botox injected across their face as a preventative measure against wrinkles — a treatment people are calling “Baby Botox.” And lots of our clients are also older women and men that want to look fresh and rejuvenated.

So at the end of the day, the ideal age for Botox is whenever you decide it’s time to have a little pick-me-up for yourself.

How Much Are Botox Injections in Miami?

Botox is priced per unit, and the amount of units you need will be determined in your initial consultation with a Dr. Patty Miami aesthetic provider. On average, you can expect to pay around $12 to $20 per Botox unit and $6 to $12 for Dysport.
