Treatment

Your dermatologist may recommend a combination of treatments to stop the spread of vitiligo’s characteristic white patches and restore pigment to the affected areas. Bear in mind that there’s no cure for vitiligo, which means that treatments may reduce the appearance but not stop its progression.

Prescription topical medications such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors may help repigment the skin to some degree. And light therapy, which is most effective when combined with topicals, can restore skin color or even out your tone even more. You may need several treatments until you notice any changes — about 10 to 15 initially, as well as additional follow-up sessions to maintain results.
