Sedation Dentistry

We get it. Visiting the dentist can be a major source of anxiety. Let us put your fears to rest through a combination of holistic relaxation techniques, including expert sedation options and soothing, upscale amenities curated to transform the way you experience dental care.

Redefining Relaxation

Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help you feel more relaxed during a dental procedure. It is not the same as being under general anesthetic because you are not completely asleep during the treatment. But it is an excellent alternative if you experience dental anxiety and wish to feel more comfortable during your visit.

At Dr. Patty Miami we offer a selection of sedation choices based on your individual needs and preferences. Your sedation dentistry specialist may recommend:

Laser

The professionals at Dr. Patty Miami are committed to your health and wellness. That’s why we use lasers to offer a safe, anxiety-free dental experience without drills and scalpels. This innovative laser technology has several advantages, including minimal intervention and, in most cases, little-to-no anesthesia.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled during your treatment to induce a sense of calm and happiness. This method is one of the most common forms of sedation because it’s safe and effective for both children and adults. Nitrous oxide typically begins to take effect within less than a minute and the effects wear off almost immediately after the procedure is done.

IV Sedation

IV or intravenous sedation involves gently placing an IV in your arm and administering medication to help you enter into a deeper state of relaxation. You may be a good candidate for IV sedation if you are undergoing complex treatment or have extreme dental anxiety. While you will still be conscious, with IV sedation you’ll have almost no recollection of the procedure.

Local Anesthesia

Local numbing agents are applied topically to a specific area before injecting an anesthetic solution that blocks pain signals. While the uncomfortable effects of local anesthesia can last for several hours, we offer numbing reversal so you can regain normal sensation and smile, eat, and speak soon after your procedure.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes. Sedation dentistry is considered a safe and effective method for managing dental anxiety. As with every other medical procedure, there is always a small risk of complications. But when performed by an experienced dentist like the ones at Dr. Patty Miami, sedation dentistry is safe even for small children.

The sedation dentists at Dr. Patty Miami have the experience and expertise to make any procedure as safe and comfortable as possible. For more information about dental sedation call us or request an appointment online.

Am I A Candidate For Sedation Dentistry?

Almost everybody is a candidate for sedation dentistry. You may benefit from sedation options if you have:

  • Fear of the dentist
  • Sensitive teeth
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Low tolerance to pain

Sedation dentistry may not be appropriate for people with certain drug allergies or medical conditions. Talk to your dentist at Dr. Patty Miami to find out which sedation option is right for you.

How Long Will The Sedation Effects Last?

The sedation effects can last from a couple minutes after your procedure to a few hours, depending on the type of medication used. The effects of sedation with nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately after the procedure. With IV sedation, you will be fully recovered from its effects within six hours or less.

Can You Eat Before Sedation Dentistry?

It depends on the type of sedation. A common side effect of nitrous oxide is nausea, so your dentist may advise you to stop eating a few hours before a procedure with this sedative. If you require IV sedation, you are generally not allowed to eat for at least six hours before the procedure or to drink for at least two hours before.
