Melasma

Melasma is marked by discolored patches that usually show up on the face. It’s also called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” because it’s common among pregnant women. About 90% of people who develop melasma are women, but men can get it too.

No one really knows what causes melasma; people with darker skin tones seem to be more likely to get it. Certain hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone, may also play a role. And, of course, sun exposure seems to be a big contributing factor.
