Am I A Candidate For Fat Transfer?

You may be a candidate for our Dr. Patty Miami fat transfer surgery if you want to add long-lasting volume to areas like the face, lips, breasts, or backside. In general, a good candidate is:

18 years and older
Not a smoker (or willing to quit at least 2 weeks before the procedure)
In good mental and physical health
Not pregnant or breastfeeding

The Procedure

The specifics of your procedure will depend upon the areas you wish to enhance. You’ll meet with your Dr. Patty Miami cosmetic surgery team for instructions on how to prepare for fat grafting and go over your personalized surgical plan beforehand.

Our fat transfer in Miami is performed on an outpatient basis at our luxury medical and cosmetic boutique, so you’ll be able to return home the same day of the intervention. The procedure is completed under general anesthesia or IV sedation and takes 1 to 3 hours from start to finish.

The process generally involves 3 steps:

Extracting fat from the donor area through [liposuction]
Centrifuging and purifying the harvested fat cells to separate debris and dead cells
Reinjecting the sanitized fat into the target areas

At first, you may notice that your treatment area looks a little larger than expected or slightly overfilled. Your surgeon does this to account for the small amounts of fat cells that your body absorbs in the six weeks after the procedure. To help the fat injections become more established, it’s important that you follow your aftercare protocol and get plenty of rest after surgery.

Recovering From Fat Transfer

Immediately after your surgery, you’ll have the chance to rest at one of our private recovery suites until you’re cleared to go home with a friend or family member.

The treatment area will be wrapped in special compression bandages to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Swelling is very common after fat grafting and typically resolves after a couple of weeks. However, it may take up to 12 weeks until you see full results. You can also expect some mild bruising and soreness both at the donor and the injection sites.

Depending on the extent of the fat transfer, you may be able to resume your normal activities after 3 to 7 days. It’s important to keep the treatment areas as still as possible for the first few days to give the newly transplanted adipose cells a good chance to become vascularized, or “take.”
