Eyelid Surgery

The skin in and around your eyes is much thinner and delicate than anywhere else in the body, which is why your eyelids are among the first to exhibit the signs of aging on your face. As the skin loses elasticity, the eyelids droop and sag above the eye crease, giving your face a tired and aged appearance.

Although sagging eyelids are extremely common, there’s no need to go through life feeling uncomfortable with the way your eyes look.

Eyelid surgery, sometimes known as blepharoplasty, corrects hooded, sagging, and wrinkled eyelids by removing excess skin above or below the eyes. It is one of the most requested surgeries for women and men over 40 because it is a subtle enhancement that makes a huge difference.

The Inevitable Effects Of Aging

If there’s one thing in life you can’t avoid (if you’re lucky), it’s aging. And that’s actually a beautiful thing, because it’s a sign that you have made it this far and enjoyed a long, happy life. But it’s also true that getting older isn’t always a walk in the park. The visible effects of aging, particularly on the face and skin, can make it harder to look yourself in the mirror and reconcile the image you see with how you feel inside.

And, unfortunately, it all starts with the eyes. Over time, the muscles around your eyes begin to weaken, causing the eyelids to sag and form a hood over the eye crease. This creates a perpetually fatigued look and ages you beyond your years.

A blepharoplasty can address these and other issues by surgically removing excess skin and fatty tissue from above or under the eyes (or both). Also known as an “eye lift,” upper eyelid surgery may be a great option if you have hooded or heavy eyelids that make you feel self-conscious, make it challenging to apply makeup, or physically obstruct your vision. Lower eye lifting surgery eliminates bulging fat and puffy eyebags to revitalize your gaze and refine your facial features.

How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed

At Dr. Patty Miami, eyelid surgery is performed at our high-end, hospital-grade surgical and cosmetic boutique. The procedure is typically completed under local anesthesia and sedation, though general anesthesia is also available.

Before your surgery, you will meet privately with a certified Dr. Patty Miami cosmetic surgeon to discuss your concerns and goals. We believe that the best results are achieved together, with doctor and patient collaborating to bring to life one aesthetic vision. So, at this consultation, you and your surgeon will work together to decide the most appropriate course of action for your case.

A blepharoplasty is a very personal procedure. The goal is to look like a refreshed, more awake version of yourself while avoiding the dreaded “shocked” eyes that once characterized eye lifting surgery. Depending on your preferences and the current state of your eyelids, you can choose between upper or lower blepharoplasty, though in many cases, patients opt for both to address both areas at the same time.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Concerns addressed: Upper eyelid surgery corrects hooded or low-hanging lids and tightens the upper lids. Depending on what’s causing the eyelid to droop, the muscles responsible for opening the eyes may be shortened or repositioned. When the underlying muscle is still strong, excess skin is meticulously removed, and fat is excised or manipulated to eliminate puffiness. As always, the goal is to preserve your natural appearance and enhance your unique features.

Incisions: Along the natural crease of the eyelids.

Surgery time: 1 to 2 hours.

Anesthesia: Local or general.

Recovery: 1-3 weeks. Expect some swelling and mild bruising in the first few weeks following the procedure. Avoid straining, bending, and lifting for at least 3 weeks. Pain and discomfort can be addressed with cold compresses and pain medications.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Concerns addressed: Lower eyelid surgery corrects eyelid bags and puffiness. During this procedure, two small incisions are made to remove fatty tissue and extra skin. Fat can then be repositioned to fill up the contours of the lower lids and upper cheeks and avoid a sunken appearance.

Incisions: Along the lash line or within the lower lid.

Surgery time: 1 to 2 hours.

Anesthesia: Local or general.

Recovery: 1-3 weeks. Dark circles underneath the eyes can then be addressed with [laser skin resurfacing]. Expect some mild swelling and bruising. Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 3 weeks. Pain and discomfort can be addressed with cold compresses and pain medication.
