An Alternative for Jittery Children

It’s common for kids to feel a little (or a lot!) scared about visiting the dentist. Unfamiliar people, weird-looking tools, and the expectation of pain can make for a nerve-wracking combination. Sedation dentistry is a wonderful choice for patients who feel anxious about their dental treatment. Your child may benefit from sedation dentistry if she or he:

  • Is very young and has difficulty cooperating during dental procedures
  • Has very sensitive teeth or gums
  • Has had past traumatic dental experiences
  • Needs extensive or complex dental treatment
  • Has a sensitive gag reflex
  • Has problems sitting still
  • Has [special needs]

Sedation Options at Dr. Patty Miami

We offer different levels of dental sedation options. Depending on the severity of the anxiety or the procedure being performed, we will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan individually tailored to your child’s needs. Your child’s dentist might recommend one of the following options:

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas” or “happy air,” nitrous oxide is the most common sedation dentistry option for decreasing anxiety and making kids feel more comfortable. Before the procedure, we will ask your child to pick a flavor/smell they like – strawberry, bubble gum, vanilla, cotton candy – and place the smell into a “piggy nose” mask through which they will inhale the laughing gas.

Despite its name, laughing gas doesn’t usually make people laugh. Instead, it promotes a feeling of happy relaxation that melts away fears and anxiety. Your child will remain awake and fully conscious throughout the procedure. Once turned off, the gas leaves the body almost immediately, and there are no lasting effects.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is recommended for children who may benefit from more sedation than can be provided with laughing gas alone. Oral or conscious sedation uses medication chosen specifically to fit your child’s health and dental needs.

About 10 minutes before initiating treatment, your child will drink a “sleepy juice” that helps them relax. While the goal of oral sedation is not to put your child to sleep, some kids experience drowsiness and may even fall asleep during the procedure. However, she/he will remain conscious the entire time.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia may be an appropriate option for children that require extensive dental treatment or experience extreme anxiety. Your child will be in a state of unconsciousness and will wake up with no recollection of the procedure. Your child’s dentist will discuss whether your child is a candidate for general anesthesia, which is always administered in-house by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

When Could My Child Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry allows anxious children and adults to get the oral care they need without fear or stress. At Dr. Patty Miami, we use sedation dentistry methods daily and for all kinds of procedures. Some treatments that may require sedation for children include:

Sedation Safety

At Dr. Patty Miami, we take sedation VERY seriously. Our highly skilled team of dentists, nurses, and assistants have received extensive training in sedation and anesthesia, so you can rest assured your children will receive the highest level of care with us.

Sedation is always administered by a qualified and certified physician who stays by your child’s side throughout the procedure, monitoring their heart and breathing rate, oxygen, and pain levels.

Prior to your child’s sedation appointment, the anesthesia team at Dr. Patty Miami will spend time talking with you about your child’s medical history. They will also discuss how to prepare and what to expect from the procedure.

Finally, we understand that kids feel more comfortable with their parents in new environments or intimidating situations. That’s why you are always welcome to join your child in the treatment suite.

If you feel that your daughter or son could benefit from sedation dentistry, please call us or request an appointment online. A member of our team will be happy to answer any questions and help you determine which sedation option may be right for them.
