You deserve to feel the happiness and pride that come from regaining your health and body through weight loss surgery. Our Miami lap band surgery is a simple yet ground-breaking procedure that helps you lose weight gradually by reducing the amount of food your stomach can hold at one time.
Unlike the gastric sleeve surgery or the bypass technique, our laparoscopic band surgery involves no cutting of your intestines, no staples, and significantly less risk of severe complications.
Understanding Gastric Band Surgery
Gastric banding surgery, sometimes known as lap band surgery, is a type of surgical weight loss intervention where a silicone adjustable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach to decrease how much food it can hold during one meal. Weight loss surgeries are also called bariatric surgeries.
An advantage to lap band surgery is that it is performed using the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique. This means that your surgeon will only make a few tiny incisions during the procedure to insert the band with a set of long narrow instruments. Laparoscopic procedures involve significantly less downtime, and there’s a smaller chance for post-surgical complications like infections or hernia.
Another pro is that the band itself is adjustable. Your doctor will ask you to come back for follow-up appointments where she or he will inflate the band with small amounts of saline solution. The degree of tightness affects how much you can eat — and how hungry you feel afterward — so as you lose weight, the band will be periodically adjusted to help you stay on track with your weight loss goals. It can also be deflated if it’s too tight or to accommodate exceptional circumstances, like pregnancy.

- Have a history of being unable to achieve healthy weight loss through traditional methods, including diet and exercise

- Or a BMI of 30 to 35 and two or more severe obesity-related health conditions, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), etc.
- Be at least 13 years old
Preparing For Bariatric Surgery
Weight loss surgery comes with a fair amount of preparation. During your initial consultation, you’ll get to know your Dr. Patty Miami surgeon and weight loss team and ask any questions you may have about your procedure.
You’ll also undergo a comprehensive evaluation, which will include questions about your weight history, diet, physical and mental health, and your motivation for getting the surgery. Additionally, your surgeon will want you to visit other healthcare providers for a complete physical and lab tests to ensure you are healthy enough for the intervention. In some cases, you may also have a mental health evaluation, imaging studies (ultrasound) of your stomach, or an endoscopy, if appropriate.
It’s common for your surgeon to ask you to lose some weight before bariatric surgery. This is to make the surgery safer and the transition easier and less sudden. If you smoke, you’ll need to quit several months prior to the procedure.

The Procedure
Our Dr. Patty Miami bariatric surgery is performed as an out-patient procedure at our custom-built operating room, which is fully accredited, private, and safe for both major and minor surgical interventions.
The surgery can be completed under general anesthesia or twilight sedation. You and your surgeon will agree on this beforehand based on your preferences, health status, and doctor’s recommendations. Lap band surgery usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
During the procedure, your surgeon will make several small cuts in your upper abdomen (near the ribcage) to insert a laparoscope, which is essentially a slender hollow tube that allows doctors to introduce small surgery tools through the incisions. The adjustable gastric band will be placed around the top part of your stomach and tightened to create a small pouch, which divides your stomach into two sections.
The band will then be connected to a small access port under the skin of your abdomen so your doctor can inflate or deflate it with saline solution as necessary.
Recovering From Lap Band Surgery
Recovery from lap band surgery varies from person to person. However, thanks to the laparoscopic technique, most patients can return to work as soon as one week after the procedure.
Your Dr. Patty Miami weight loss team will provide you with a detailed post-op protocol, including a personalized nutrition regime and exercise plan to help you maintain your surgery results.
You’ll most likely begin on a liquid diet the first few days after your procedure, then move onto a soft diet, and gradually ease back into solid foods. Some patients feel well enough to start eating small portions of healthy solid foods in the third week after surgery.
The pouch created by the lap band is significantly smaller than your stomach — about the size of a golf ball. It fills out quickly when you eat and empties slowly, so you’ll feel fuller sooner and stay satiated for longer. Eating too much, especially too soon after your surgery, can cause stomach pain or vomiting.
You’ll be asked to come back to adjust the size of your band 6 to 8 weeks after your procedure and then periodically for the next 12 months or so, depending on how much and how quickly you lose weight.
