Acne
Acne, both mild or severe, can be a major source of anxiety and self-consciousness. Most of us have succumbed to the pressure of (not so gently) picking away at a zit or experimenting with extreme, sometimes dangerous measures that end up doing more harm than good. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to clear up those breakouts, whether they are caused by bacterial overgrowth, hormonal changes, or anything in between.
Treatments
Treating acne is never one-size-fits-all. Our goal is to put you on the safest, most effective treatment for your specific situation. Treatments may include:
Medications: moderate to severe cases of acne can be treated with oral medications like antibiotics, birth control pills, and Accutane. We often combine medication treatments with prescription or OTC topical creams and ointments for severe cases that don’t respond well to traditional approaches.
Topicals: topical creams containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, lactic acid, retinoids, and other active ingredients are often the first line of treatment for improving acne. They can be prescription-strength or OTC, and are typically used in tandem with other therapies, like medications, lasers, or gentle peels to calm down upset skin.
Scar treatments: we are thrilled to offer [Fraxel laser] for acne scars, the “magic eraser” fractional treatment that revitalizes the skin, evens tone and texture, and boosts collagen production. In some cases, we may also recommend [PRP injections] to smooth and heal your complexion.

Mole/Wart Removal
Maybe it’s about time you got that weird skin tag checked out, isn’t it? Melanoma is a very dangerous skin cancer that kills one American every 55 minutes. And all moles have the potential to develop into melanoma.
During your appointment at Dr. Patty Miami, your dermatologist will check the size, color, and texture of your moles and freckles to look for abnormalities. If one or more need to be removed — or if you want it gone for cosmetic reasons — you can trust that the removal process will be quick, painless, and with minimal to no scarring.
Treatment
Once you’re comfortably settled into one of our upscale treatment suites, your doctor will clean the surface of the treatment area and inject a local anesthetic to block pain. After the area is nice and numb, the mole will be surgically excised with a scalpel. In some cases, a bit of the surrounding tissue will also need to be removed. The procedure only takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete, after which you can return to your regular activities like normal.

Psoriasis
While psoriasis is a common condition, it’s often mistreated or misdiagnosed. And the thing about psoriasis is that in addition to affecting the skin, nails, and scalp, it can affect other organs — even the cardiovascular system, so it’s important to take a comprehensive approach when dealing with this condition.
The dry, scaly patches that appear on the surface of the skin are both very uncomfortable and very noticeable. And many things can worsen psoriasis flare ups, like stress, weather, smoking, and even certain medications. Luckily, there are treatments available to reduce its frequency and severity.
Treatment
At Dr. Patty Miami, our approach to psoriasis includes a personalized protocol created according to your unique needs and the current state of your skin. Your plan may include medical treatments like topical creams, non-invasive therapies like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a customized regime of dietary supplements to soothe your skin from the inside out, and lifestyle modification tips to lessen systemic inflammation.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a long-term auto-inflammatory condition that can arise anywhere on the body, though it most commonly affects the face. The cause is still not totally clear; rosacea seems to be triggered by an uncontrolled dilation of blood vessels in the skin that results in the characteristic dry, scaly patches. There are also a number of factors that seem to contribute to its development, like immune disorders, stress, blood flow issues, stress, and smoking.
Today, there are many safe and effective approaches to treat rosacea. The Dermatology Team at Dr. Patty Miami treats rosacea on a case-by-case basis based both on your type of rosacea and the current state of your skin — aka, we won’t prescribe an abrasive or irritating treatment if you are in the middle of a flare up.
And since this condition affects every person differently, your tailor-made treatment protocol will also include diet recommendations, lifestyle tips, and skincare products to help you break the cycle of rosacea. A typical protocol includes:
Treatment
For milder cases, a combination of topical treatments and laser therapy can effectively reduce redness and visible blood vessels. Typically, laser treatments require a series of sessions to see results. These are usually spaced about six weeks apart to allow your skin to heal between sessions; you may need up to 6-8 visits. Oral antibiotics or radiofrequency ablation may also be recommended in moderate to severe cases.
Seborrheic Dermatitis
It’s itchy, annoying, and embarrassing, but it isn’t contagious or a sign of poor personal hygiene. Seborrheic dermatitis, sometimes called seborrheic eczema, is a skin condition that can affect any area of the body where sebaceous glands are present — basically anywhere except the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet.
The most common region affected is the scalp, where it manifests as itchy white flakes (dandruff) or crusty yellow scales. While the cause remains unknown, one theory is that seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction to excess Malassezia yeast, a microorganism that lives on the surface of the skin. Stress is also a potential trigger, as is depression, cold weather, and a history of other skin disorders, like rosacea or psoriasis.
Treatment
Seborrheic dermatitis is treated with a combination of self-care strategies and topical therapies. For body rashes, your dermatologist may recommend sulfur and zinc-based soaps and washes that soothe and moisturize the skin deeply. Prescription antifungals, topical calcineurin inhibitors, and corticosteroids are also excellent options when your flare up needs a little extra help. Scalp seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) is usually managed with prescription-strength anti-dandruff shampoos.

Vitiligo
Vitiligo — the condition where the skin loses its natural pigmentation resulting in white spots — is one of dermatology’s biggest mysteries. It doesn’t have a cure, and we don’t know what causes it. But we do know that it’s not life-threatening or contagious, and that certain treatments can reduce and limit the effects of depigmentation caused by this condition.
Treatment
Your dermatologist may recommend a combination of treatments to stop the spread of vitiligo’s characteristic white patches and restore pigment to the affected areas. Bear in mind that there’s no cure for vitiligo, which means that treatments may reduce the appearance but not stop its progression.
Prescription topical medications such as corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors may help repigment the skin to some degree. And light therapy, which is most effective when combined with topicals, can restore skin color or even out your tone even more. You may need several treatments until you notice any changes — about 10 to 15 initially, as well as additional follow-up sessions to maintain results.

Hair Loss
If you’re struggling with hair loss in Miami, we invite you to come in for a comprehensive scalp evaluation to help you get to the bottom of the problem. Hair loss treatments vary depending on what’s causing the issue. Losing more than just a few strands when you brush or run your hands through your hair may be a signal of a medical condition, like thyroid problems or hormonal imbalances. Or it may be a side effect of pregnancy or childbirth. And alopecia areata, which is a condition that causes hair to fall out in small patches, could also be a culprit of sudden hair loss.
TREATMENT
While watching your hair fall out can be downright terrifying, there are effective treatments available for certain types of hair loss.
Prescription or OTC topical agents applied directly to the scalp can help stimulate hair growth and reduce shedding. Sometimes, if your hair falls out because your follicles are swollen or infected, topical corticosteroids could reduce this inflammation and spur hair growth again. Injected steroids, [laser therapy], [platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP)], and oral medications are also great alternatives. Your Dr. Patty Miami dermatologist will help you determine which treatment is best for you.

Melasma
Melasma is marked by discolored patches that usually show up on the face. It’s also called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” because it’s common among pregnant women. About 90% of people who develop melasma are women, but men can get it too.
No one really knows what causes melasma; people with darker skin tones seem to be more likely to get it. Certain hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone, may also play a role. And, of course, sun exposure seems to be a big contributing factor.
Treatment
Melasma can’t be cured, but it can be greatly improved and controlled with the right approach. The first step is to establish an appropriate skincare routine. Your Dr. Patty Miami dermatologist will recommend products based on your skin type and condition, like prescription-strength topical creams that can lighten the skin.
Many of our patients have seen jaw-dropping results with exfoliating chemical peels. And [microdermabrasion] has also shown great success. These treatments gently remove the top layers of your skin to reveal a smoother, more evenly-toned surface.

Lupus and Collagen Vascular Disease
Collagen vascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term for a group of disorders, like lupus, that affect your connective tissues — ligaments, tendons, cartilage. Lupus and other CVDs are autoimmune diseases, which mean that they make your immune system mistakenly attack your body’s healthy tissues. They also affect collagen, the protein responsible for keeping your joints healthy and your skin nice and taut.
Certain CVDs, like discoid lupus erythematosus, or DLE, can cause persistent skin lesions, swollen rashes, changes in pigmentation, and scarring. These rashes can be small and harmless or extensive and painful. They are usually also accompanied by other symptoms, like fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain.
Treatment
Treatments include prescription drugs like corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Immunosuppressants are also effective in some cases. You will receive a tailor-made treatment plan with medical, skincare, and lifestyle strategies to slow skin changes, manage pain and discomfort, and prevent recurring infections.
{mb_oral-surgery_engagement_section_5}
Skin Infections
Your skin may become infected for any number of reasons, like getting a cut or a scratch, being exposed to a virus, or wearing wet or sweaty clothes that promote fungal growth, just to name a few.
Treatment
If you think you may be experiencing a skin infection, give us a call or request an appointment online with a professional dermatologist today. Skin infections are treated based on type and severity, so a comprehensive evaluation is important for deciding how to approach them.
Generally speaking, bacterial infections are addressed with topical or oral antibiotics. Some types of viral infections resolve on their own within a few days or weeks, but can prescribe topical ointments to relieve any itching or discomfort. Fungal infections are treated with OTC antifungal creams or sprays. And depending on the extent of the infection, in-office procedures may be needed to drain pus.
