Endodontic Retreatment

With proper care, a tooth that has received root canal treatment can last as long as your natural teeth. But sometimes the treated tooth can fail to heal or become infected again months or years later. If this happens, the endodontic specialists at Dr. Patty Miami can give your tooth a second chance with retreatment.

Why A Root Canal May Fail

[Root canal treatment] has a very high success rate. But as with other procedures, your tooth may not heal as expected, causing infection to return. These are a few potential reasons why endodontic retreatment may be needed:

  • The permanent restoration wasn’t placed correctly or in time, causing saliva and bacteria to leak inside the tooth and contaminate the site
  • New decay exposed the root canal to bacteria, leading to a new infection
  • The previous infection didn’t clear correctly
  • Narrow or curved canal spaces were not detected or cleaned properly the first time around
  • The crown became loose, exposing the tooth to new infection
  • The tooth sustained a fracture or crack

Saving Your Tooth With Endodontic Retreatment

At Dr. Patty Miami, our goal is that you have a positive and comfortable experience at every visit. Upon arriving at our dental and medical boutique, you will be escorted to one of our luxury treatment rooms equipped with personal TV screens and noise-canceling headphones for your enjoyment. Endodontic retreatment is performed under local anesthetic, but we also offer a menu of sedation alternatives, like laughing gas and oral medications to help you relax.

Once your tooth is prepared and the area is completely numb, your endodontist will reopen the root and remove any root canal filling materials that were previously placed. Then, the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with an antibacterial paste. Your doctor will carefully examine all areas of the tooth and screen for hidden canals that may be harboring bacteria.

On the second visit, the antibacterial paste will be removed, and the canals will once again be cleaned and reshaped. Finally, a new root canal filling will be placed, and the area covered with a temporary resin filing. After the tooth has fully healed, your endodontist may place a new [dental crown] to return your smile’s function and aesthetic appeal

Options Beyond Endodontic Retreatment

Sometimes endodontic retreatment fails or is not a good option. But there may still be a chance to save your tooth and avoid extraction through [apical surgery or apicoectomy]. This surgery can remove infections that may be too large or severe for the body to clear on its own.

The endodontists at Dr. Patty Miami can help you determine whether endodontic retreatment or apical surgery are the right options for you.

If you continue experiencing pain at a previously treated tooth, or think you may have a new infection, give us a call or schedule an appointment online. Our elite team of multidisciplinary experts will work to restore the health of your tooth and get you back to loving your smile in as little time as possible.
